OR- HB 2470 to be considered Monday, March 30th at 3:00

Oregon Alert! HB 2470 To Be Considered Monday, March 30

Oregon House Bill 2470, which seeks to severely limit the responsible breeding of dogs, will be heard by the Oregon House Consumer Protection Committee on Monday, March 30. The American Kennel Club and its Oregon federation, the National Animal Interest Alliance, both strongly oppose HB 2470, and encourage all concerned responsible dog breeders and owners in Oregon write or e-mail the committee members. Respectfully let them know that you oppose HB 2470.

House Bill 2470:

* Defines any breeder who sells more than 20 dogs, or 3 litters in a year, as a "pet dealer".

* Limits anyone from possessing more than 25 intact dogs four months of age or older.

* Imposes significant and cumbersome operational requirements on all dog owners who own 10 or more intact dogs.

* Mandates record-keeping requirements and certain disclosures at time of sale.

* Requires breeders to comply with an unreasonable consumer protection term of two years.

* Exempts shelters, veterinarians, pet stores, and research facilities from new standards of care.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
The American Kennel Club and the National Animal Interest Alliance encourage all responsible dog breeders and owners to attend the committee hearing on March 30. Here are the details:

Would you have 20, 30, 50 babies?
What is wrong with you people? The AKC is just out for the buck too. They protect the breeders. They have an excuse for everything. Dogs are living, breathing, creatures. Man's best friend! They don't have a choice. They look to you for love and comfort, yet they're locked in cages to bred for your buck. Find a new job! If your dog is in a cage, you should be shacked up right next to him. Here let me throw you a scrap.

Dear Anonymous,

Well now, of course what you suggest is “almost” impossible.

Is your issue the number of babies, or how you think these dogs live? They are different issues.

Do you have children? How many times have you been pregnant? Let’s just say that you have 3 children- so you have had 3 pregnancies. Many breeds of dogs have 10 + puppies in a litter (without fertility treatments I might add). 3 pregnancies for them could easily = 30 puppies.

What do you think about these women who have having babies after babies? I think the women in 18 kids and counting is SICK! 18 kids means that she has been pregnant for 13.5 years of her life. I don’t know how old she is- but I would say she qualifies as a “baby mill”. Right now there is a “movement” among conservative Christians (the Quiverfull movement) promoting families of lots (8-12 +) children. Being pregnant that many times really takes its toll on a women. Based on these few women, maybe we ought to pass a law saying, “no one should be allowed to have more than 2 children or the number of healthy, productive, working, adults in the home- which ever is less.” Creating laws that capture “everyone” who participate in some activity (breeding dogs or having children) is not addressing the problems. The problem is abandonment by the people who buy dogs to be a part of the family- then decide they can’t keep the dog.

I hope that you spend as much energy on human issues as you do on this one- I would suggest you volunteer at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, half-way house, foster home, or other “shelter for people”. There are an awful lot of “abandoned people” who could really use your passion.
